U.S. Route 183 - History

History

When the route was first commissioned in 1930, it ran from North Platte, Nebraska to near Selden, Kansas. This route is now U.S. Highway 83.

From 1932 until I-90 was built in the 1960s, US 183's northern terminus was 10 miles (16 km) further west, in Vivian, South Dakota at an intersection with its parent, U.S. Highway 83. In 1940, the southern terminus was extended south to Junction, Texas. It reached its present endpoint in 1951. In 1952, it was rerouted between Throckmorton, Texas and Cisco, replacing part of SH 6 and Texas State Highway 187.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of all countries shows that the working class exclusively by its own effort is able to develop only trade-union consciousness.
    Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1870–1924)

Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a demon than the Word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.
    Thomas Paine (1737–1809)

[Men say:] “Don’t you know that we are your natural protectors?” But what is a woman afraid of on a lonely road after dark? The bears and wolves are all gone; there is nothing to be afraid of now but our natural protectors.
Frances A. Griffin, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 19, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)
