U.S. Route 158 - History

History

US 158 was established in 1932, the route between Mocksville to Murfreesboro is roughly the same as today; however, from Murfreesboro it went north into Virginia. In 1939, US 158 was rerouted east, through Elizabeth City and Kitty Hawk, to Manteo; the old route into Virginia was replaced as an extension by US 258. In 1957, US 64/US 264 were extended to Nags Head; as a result, US 258 was truncated in Nags Head; location commonly referred to as Whalebone Junction. In 1963, US 158 on Bodie Island was split into business and bypass (business route later disbanded in 1988).

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Every library should try to be complete on something, if it were only the history of pinheads.
    Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809–1894)

No matter how vital experience might be while you lived it, no sooner was it ended and dead than it became as lifeless as the piles of dry dust in a school history book.
    Ellen Glasgow (1874–1945)

Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under men’s reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)
