Opposition

Opposition to ratification by some religious groups, some of whom claim it conflicts with the United States Constitution, has apparently played a significant role in the non-ratification of the treaty so far.

Active opposition to the Convention in the United States has been concentrated in politically conservative groups., page 83 Senator Jesse Helms, the former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, described it as a "bag of worms," an effort to "chip away at the U.S. Constitution." Famous quotes containing the word opposition:

Human life in common is only made possible when a majority comes together which is stronger than any separate individual and which remains united against all separate individuals. The power of this community is then set up as “right” in opposition to the power of the individual, which is condemned as “brute force.”
    Sigmund Freud (1856–1939)

The ancient bitter opposition to improved methods [of production] on the ancient theory that it more than temporarily deprives men of employment ... has no place in the gospel of American progress.
    Herbert Hoover (1874–1964)

The history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
