Urban Heat Island - Impact On Nearby Water Bodies

Impact On Nearby Water Bodies

Runoff from rainfall can lead to heating via conduction from the surface which the water is flowing over. In August 2001, rains over Cedar Rapids, Iowa led to a 10.5C (18.9F) rise in the nearby stream within one hour, which led to a fish kill. Since the temperature of the rain was comparatively cool, it could be attributed to the hot pavement of the city. Similar events have been documented across the American Midwest, as well as Oregon and California.

Famous quotes containing the words impact on, impact, nearby, water and/or bodies:

Too many existing classrooms for young children have this overriding goal: To get the children ready for first grade. This goal is unworthy. It is hurtful. This goal has had the most distorting impact on five-year-olds. It causes kindergartens to be merely the handmaidens of first grade.... Kindergarten teachers cannot look at their own children and plan for their present needs as five-year-olds.
James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)

If the federal government had been around when the Creator was putting His hand to this state, Indiana wouldn’t be here. It’d still be waiting for an environmental impact statement.
    Ronald Reagan (b. 1911)

    ... runs off
    three-leggèd, scared,
    but tarries nearby and will
    return. A friend.
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

    Because of neglect, Son,
    though well-forged
    in affectionate bonds,
    Love in time
    will trickle away
    like water through cupped hands.
    Hla Stavhana (c. 50 A.D.)

So, while their bodies moulder here
Their souls with God himself shall dwell,—
    But always recollect, my dear,
That wicked people go to hell.
    Ann Taylor (1782–1866)
