Upper Merion Area High School

Upper Merion Area High School is a high school of the Upper Merion Area School District located at 435 Crossfield Road in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

In 2004, Upper Merion Area High School's varsity track and field relay team placed 6th in the state of Pennsylvania in the 4x800 meter relay at Shippensburg University. Clocking in at a time of 7:55.30, it broke a 26-year-old school record by less than a second. The winning team consisted of leadoff leg, Mike Brothers, 2nd leg, Jon Gries, 3rd leg, Matthew Cunningham, and anchor, Ronak Patel.

Upper Merion Area High School's varsity track and field relay team was crowned Suburban One-American Champions in the 4x400 meter relay in the 2005 Spring season clocking in at 3.25.82. The winning relay team consisted of leadoff leg, Nicholas Tsipras, 2nd leg, Matthew Cunningham, 3rd leg, Ronak Patel, and anchor, Sean Donovan.

Upper Merion Area High School's varsity baseball team was crowned PIAA District I Champions in their 2008-2009 season.

Upper Merion Area High School's varsity boys lacrosse team was crowned Suburban One-American Champions in their 2010 season.

Upper Merion is one of four remaining high schools in the original Suburban One League.

The varsity girls volleyball team was crowned PIAA District I Champions in the 2010-2011 season. They went on to compete in the PIAA State Championship where they finished as the 2nd best volleyball team in Pennsylvania.

In 1987, the school was the setting for "Echoes in the Darkness", a book written by Joseph Wambaugh detailing the murder of a teacher and her two children for insurance money, allegedly by the head of the English department and the former principal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echoes_in_the_Darkness). This was later converted into a made-for-TV movie and released with critical acclaim.

In 1994, four Upper Merion seniors (Ray M., Bill S., Jim M., and Terry K.) formed the punk/garage band The Housewives. Plans to tour King of Prussia were scrapped after they were denied a request to play in the backyard of another student's house. They released a single album onto cassette, The Housewives Anthology, and passed them out to anyone who wanted one. Thanks in part to their biggest fan, Frankie G., they are planning to reunite in 2013 and release a re-recorded vinyl edition of their only album.

In 2002, teacher Mr. Robert Lester was charged with sending pornographic e-mails to a supposed 12-year-old girl and boasted of sex with two teenage students and a teenage girl in his backyard pool (http://articles.philly.com/2002-12-20/news/25359593_1_e-mails-mails-high-school-teacher).

Famous quotes containing the words upper, area, high and/or school:

The enemy are no match for us in a fair fight.... The young men ... of the upper class are kind-hearted, good-natured fellows, who are unfit as possible for the business they are in. They have courage but no endurance, enterprise, or energy. The lower class are cowardly, cunning, and lazy. The height of their ambition is to shoot a Yankee from some place of safety.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

Prestige is the shadow of money and power. Where these are, there it is. Like the national market for soap or automobiles and the enlarged arena of federal power, the national cash-in area for prestige has grown, slowly being consolidated into a truly national system.
    C. Wright Mills (1916–1962)

    How high they build hospitals!
    Lighted cliffs, against dawns
Of days people will die on.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

Cinema, radio, television, magazines are a school of inattention: people look without seeing, listen in without hearing.
    Robert Bresson (b. 1907)
