Upper Ferntree Gully is signaled bi-directionally, that is, services can depart from either platform to Belgrave or the city depending on circumstance. As an example, during normal Monday to Friday morning peak there are two services that originate at Upper Ferntree Gully directly out of the stabling yards onto platform 2 that travel into the city at 6.44 am and 7.55 am. Also, for special events like concerts or AFL football games extra trains can be originated this way.
All other times, service run as below:
Platform 1:
- Lilydale and Belgrave lines—all stations and limited stops services to Ringwood and Flinders Street
Platform 2:
- Lilydale and Belgrave lines—all stations services to Belgrave
