Unrestricted Line Versus Limited Duty Officers and Chief Warrant Officers

In contrast to the U.S. Navy's Limited Duty Officers (LDO) and Chief Warrant Officers (CWO) who are directly accessed from the senior enlisted grades (E-6 to E-9 and W-2 to W-5 for LDO; E-7 to E-9 for CWO), Unrestricted Line Officers are required to possess at least a Bachelor's Degree and complete some type of formal pre-commissioning accession program. They are commissioned through programs such as the United States Naval Academy, the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (including Seaman to Admiral-21), and Officer Candidate School. Some currently serving URL officers who are Naval Aviators or Naval Flight Officers were also commissioned via the since disestablished Aviation Officer Candidate School, which was merged into the current Officer Candidate School in the late 1990s.

Famous quotes containing the words unrestricted, line, limited, duty, officers, chief and/or warrant:

    The unrestricted competition so commonly advocated does not leave us the survival of the fittest. The unscrupulous succeed best in accumulating wealth.

    If surrealism ever comes to adopt a particular line of moral conduct, it has only to accept the discipline that Picasso has accepted and will continue to accept.
    André Breton (1896–1966)

    Work though we must, our jobs do not automatically determine our priorities concerning our marriages, our children, our social life, or even our health. It’s still life, constrained as it may be by limited disposable income or leisure time, and we’re still responsible for making it something we enjoy or endure.
    Melinda M. Marshall (20th century)

    I am speaking now of the highest duty we owe our friends, the noblest, the most sacred—that of keeping their own nobleness, goodness, pure and incorrupt.... If we let our friend become cold and selfish and exacting without a remonstrance, we are no true lover, no true friend.
    Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896)

    I sometimes compare press officers to riflemen on the Somme—mowing down wave upon wave of distortion, taking out rank upon rank of supposition, deduction and gossip.
    Bernard Ingham (b. 1932)

    The chief contribution of Protestantism to human thought is its massive proof that God is a bore.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

    Here’s to the maiden of bashful fifteen;
    Here’s to the widow of fifty;
    Here’s to the flaunting extravagant queen;
    And here’s to the housewife that’s thrifty.
    Let the toast pass,—
    Drink to the lass,
    I’ll warrant she’ll prove an excuse for the glass.
    Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816)
