United States Court of Appeals For The Third Circuit

The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit (in case citations, 3d Cir.) is a federal court with appellate jurisdiction over the district courts for the following districts:

  • District of Delaware
  • District of New Jersey
  • Eastern District of Pennsylvania
  • Middle District of Pennsylvania
  • Western District of Pennsylvania

It also has appellate jurisdiction over the District Court of the Virgin Islands which, in spite of the name, is a territorial court and belongs to no federal judicial district.

The court is composed of 14 active judges and is based at the James A. Byrne Courthouse in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is one of thirteen United States courts of appeals. Due to the court's appellate jurisdiction over Delaware (where more than half of publicly traded companies in the United States incorporate), the court handles a significant number of influential complex commercial cases.

Famous quotes containing the words united states, united, states, court, appeals and/or circuit:

The United States is not a nation to which peace is a necessity.
    Grover Cleveland (1837–1908)

When, in some obscure country town, the farmers come together to a special town meeting, to express their opinion on some subject which is vexing to the land, that, I think, is the true Congress, and the most respectable one that is ever assembled in the United States.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

That Cabot merely landed on the uninhabitable shore of Labrador gave the English no just title to New England, or to the United States generally, any more than to Patagonia.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

If a walker is indeed an individualist there is nowhere he can’t go at dawn and not many places he can’t go at noon. But just as it demeans life to live alongside a great river you can no longer swim in or drink from, to be crowded into safer areas and hours takes much of the gloss off walking—one sport you shouldn’t have to reserve a time and a court for.
    Edward Hoagland (b. 1932)

The values to which the conservative appeals are inevitably caricatured by the individuals designated to put them into practice.
    Harold Rosenberg (1906–1978)

The Father and His angelic hierarchy
That made the magnitude and glory there
Stood in the circuit of a needle’s eye.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
