War of 1812
In January 1812 the United States authorised six companies of United States Rangers who were mounted infantry with the function of protecting the Western frontier. Five of these companies were raised in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. By December 1813 the Army Register listed officers of 12 companies of Rangers
