United Left (Spain)

United Left (Spanish: Izquierda Unida, IU) is a political coalition that was organized in 1986 bringing together several political organisations opposed to Spain joining NATO. It was formed by a number of groups of leftists, greens, left-wing socialists and republicans, but was dominated by the Communist Party of Spain (PCE). The left-wing Carlist Party and Humanist Party were also founding members of the coalition but they parted ways in 1987.

Famous quotes containing the words united and/or left:

I incline to think that the people will not now sustain the policy of upholding a State Government against a rival government, by the use of the forces of the United States. If this leads to the overthrow of the de jure government in a State, the de facto government must be recognized.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

He is to the great poet, what an excellent mimic is to a great actor. There is no determinate impression left on the mind by reading his poetry.... A great mind is one that moulds the minds of others.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)
