Union of Armed Struggle - History

History

ZWZ was created on 13 November 1939 from an earlier organization, Service for Poland's Victory (SZP). In January 1940, the ZWZ was divided into two parts:

  • areas under German occupation — commanded by Colonel Stefan Rowecki, headquartered in Warsaw;
  • areas under Soviet occupation — commanded by General Michał Tokarzewski-Karaszewicz, headquartered in Lwów.

On 14 February 1942 ZWZ was renamed Armia Krajowa (the "Home Army").

Famous quotes containing the word history:

    Literary works cannot be taken over like factories, or literary forms of expression like industrial methods. Realist writing, of which history offers many widely varying examples, is likewise conditioned by the question of how, when and for what class it is made use of.
    Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956)

    The principle office of history I take to be this: to prevent virtuous actions from being forgotten, and that evil words and deeds should fear an infamous reputation with posterity.
    Tacitus (c. 55–117)

    What we call National-Socialism is the poisonous perversion of ideas which have a long history in German intellectual life.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)
