Tuck Shop - Healthy Tuck Shops

Healthy Tuck Shops

As part of the UK government's recent promotion of healthy eating as part of healthy lifestyle, the role of tuck shops in schools has come under increasing scrutiny. As such, national, regional and local government has been strongly promoting the idea of "healthy" tuck shops. There has also been charity and voluntary sector involvement. To some, this means providing healthier types of the same goods (for example using brown bread instead of white, selling milk and fruit juice instead of fizzy drinks and rice cakes and crackers instead of crisps). This model has become very popular in many schools in the UK. Some groups have advocated going even further and creating a "fruit tuck shop". These have been less popular, primarily due to a perceived drop Tshentsho in revenue and the generally tight state of funding in the UK education system at present, although this may change in the future.

Famous quotes containing the words healthy, tuck and/or shops:

    A healthy man, with steady employment, as wood-chopping at fifty cents a cord, and a camp in the woods, will not be a good subject for Christianity. The New Testament may be a choice book to him on some, but not on all or most of his days. He will rather go a-fishing in his leisure hours. The Apostles, though they were fishers too, were of the solemn race of sea-fishers, and never trolled for pickerel on inland streams.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    And then he would lift this finest
    of furniture to his big left shoulder
    and tuck it in and draw the bow
    so carefully as to make the music

    almost visible on the air.
    Stanley Plumly (b. 1939)

    And in the shops nothing
    For people to eat;
    Nothing for sale in
    Stupidity Street.
    Ralph Hodgson (c. 1871–1962)
