Supports Tony Benn For An Instant

Clements resigned as editor in 1982 to become a political adviser to Foot (by now Labour leader), a role he continued under Foot's successor as Labour leader, Neil Kinnock. Clements was succeeded in the Tribune chair by Chris Mullin, who steered the paper into the supporting of Tony Benn (then just past the peak of his influence on the Labour left) and attempted to turn it into a workers' co-operative, much to the consternation of the old Bevanite shareholders, most prominent among them John Silkin and Donald Bruce, who dominated the paper's board. Famous quotes containing the words supports, benn and/or instant:

Patron: One who countenances, supports or protects. Commonly a wretch who supports with insolence, and is paid with flattery.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

We are not just here to manage capitalism but to change society and to define its finer values.
    —Tony Benn (b. 1925)

Unpleasant questions are being raised about Mother’s Day. Is this day necessary? . . . Isn’t it bad public policy? . . . As a class, mothers are tender and loving, but as a voting bloc they would not hesitate for an instant to pull the seat out from under any Congressman who suggests that Mother is not entitled to a box of chocolates each year in the middle of May.
    Russell Baker (20th century)
