Toonami

Toonami is a animated programming block on Cartoon Network geared toward action-oriented programming, mostly consisting of American cartoons and Japanese anime. The name is a portmanteau of the words cartoon and tsunami, suggesting a "tidal wave" of animated shows. The block first aired March 17, 1997, and was dropped on September 20, 2008. A newly designed Toonami block began airing on May 26, 2012, and continues as a Saturday night anime block on Adult Swim. During its original run, Toonami was famous for showcasing action cartoons that were popular with American audiences, such as Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo!, One Piece, and Naruto.
