Tom Wills - Time in England

Time in England

In 1850, aged fourteen, Wills was sent by his father to England to attend the famous Rugby School. At school he played both rugby football and cricket, excelling at both sports. He was noted as an attacking rugby player, who would dodge and weave opponents. He was also the team's dedicated kicker, noted for his long and accurate shots at goal.

Wills was a tall teenager and grew quickly. By 16 at 174.8 cm (5' 8.8") he was already taller than his father.

After Rugby, Wills attended Cambridge University, where he played cricket, notably in the Cambridge XI in the Varsity Match. He was listed in Bells Sporting Life as being one of the most promising young cricketers in England.

Famous quotes containing the words time in, time and/or england:

I am not able to instruct you. I can only tell that I have chosen wrong. I have passed my time in study without experience; in the attainment of sciences which can, for the most part, be but remotely useful to mankind. I have purchased knowledge at the expense of all the common comforts of life: I have missed the endearing elegance of female friendship, and the happy commerce of domestic tenderness.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

    So we may never
Again feel fully confident of the stratagem that bore us
And lived on a certain time after that. And it went away
Little by little, as most things do. To profit
By this mainstream is today’s chore and adventure.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

All the great speakers were bad speakers at first. Stumping it through England for seven years made Cobden a consummate debater. Stumping it through New England for twice seven trained Wendell Phillips.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
