Plot Overview

After Robert's disabled sister falls out of her wheelchair and dies, Robert blames his absence for her death. He wished he could have been there to catch her when she fell, and is distraught after her death. Hoping to find a new purpose, Robert enlists in the army. Despite many encounters and personality shaping events, Robert remains throughout the book a sensitive, loving, man. His love, being affected by many events throughout the novel, broadens its arms and embraces more people and animals as the novel continues.
