The Long Goodbye (novel) - Other Appearances

Other Appearances

The Long Goodbye is occasionally referred to in other works of fiction. Greg Iles refers to Raymond Chandler and the novel's title in his own novel The Quiet Game, and names one of his characters Marston. It has been featured in the Japanese tokusatsu drama Kamen Rider W, in which the main character constantly reads from a Japanese version of the book. His partner's name is also Philip.

In music, crime novelist Matt Rees's band Poisonville, which is named after the location of a Dashiell Hammett novel, released a song about The Long Goodbye on its first album. Rees described the novel as "a creepier book than people think."

Famous quotes containing the word appearances:

We often think ourselves inconsistent creatures, when we are the furthest from it, and all the variety of shapes and contradictory appearances we put on, are in truth but so many different attempts to gratify the same governing appetite.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

It is doubtless wise, when a reform is introduced, to try to persuade the British public that it is not a reform at all; but appearances must be kept up to some extent at least.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
