Otto Frank personally wrote to Audrey Hepburn, asking her if she would play the part of his daughter Anne. Frank told Hepburn that his daughter would have been honored to have such a famous Hollywood actress play her on film, and he also noted the striking resemblance that existed between Anne and Hepburn when she was an adolescent. Hepburn wrote back declining the offer, saying she felt she was too old, and lacked the skills to portray Anne. She said she was greatly honored to have been given the choice, and noted the similarity between her own war experience and that of the Frank's and the others in the annex.

Famous quotes containing the word cast:

He cast off his friends as a huntsman his pack,
For he knew when he pleas’d he could whistle them back.
    Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774)

The old man had heard that there was a wreck and knew most of the particulars, but he said that he had not been up there since it happened. It was the wrecked weed that concerned him most ... and those bodies were to him but other weeds which the tide cast up, but which were of no use to him.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Such is the remorseless progression of human society, shedding lives and souls as it goes on its way. It is an ocean into which men sink who have been cast out by the law and consigned, with help most cruelly withheld, to moral death. The sea is the pitiless social darkness into which the penal system casts those it has condemned, an unfathomable waste of misery. The human soul, lost in those depths, may become a corpse. Who shall revive it?
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)
