Warner Bros were inspired to make the movie after Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935) had been released to great popularity, ushering in a series of British Empire adventure tales. Michel Jacoby had developed a story based on the famous charge but although Warners bought it the final script was closer to Lives of Bengal Lancer.
