Sounds

Temne is a tonal language, with four tones. Among consonants, Temne distinguishes dental and alveolar, but unusually, the dental consonants are apical and the alveolar consonants are laminal (and slightly affricated), the opposite of the general pattern, though one found also in the nearby language Limba.

Famous quotes containing the word sounds:

    A flutist who is moved to tears by his own performance will soon make the listeners laugh because of the sounds that he produces.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

    I used to be angry all the time and I’d sit there weaving my anger. Now I’m not angry. I sit there hearing the sounds outside, the sounds in the room, the sounds of the treadles and heddles—a music of my own making.
    Bhakti Ziek (b. c. 1946)

    From troublous sights and sounds set free;
    In such a twilight hour of breath,
    Shall one retrace his life or see,
    Through shadows, the true face of death?
    Ernest Christopher Dowson (1867–1900)
