Surrey Fire and Rescue Service

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service employs approximately 1000 staff and looks after a population of over one million people spread across an area of 1663 square kilometres. The region features several large urban areas such as Guildford, Redhill and Woking; 64 miles of motorway; and is in close proximity to two major airports in London Gatwick and London Heathrow.

A total of 24 fire stations are strategically sited throughout the County. 17 of these are crewed on a wholetime basis, with fire engine crews available at the fire station 24 hours a day and seven are crewed on a part-time basis (i.e. the crew live and work in the near vicinity and are available on call).

Historically, fire cover was set to national standards that were defined back in the 1930s.

Famous quotes containing the words surrey, fire, rescue and/or service:

    Thus I alone, where all my freedom grew,
    In prison pine with bondage and restraint;
    And with remembrance of the greater grief
    To banish the less, I find my chief relief.
    Henry Howard, Earl Of Surrey (1517?–1547)

    As I pursued my bodily functions, wanting
    Neither fire nor water,
    Vibrating to the distant pinch
    And turning out the way I am, turning out to greet you.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

    To rescue from oblivion even a fragment of a language which men have used and which is in danger of being lost—that is to say, one of the elements, whether good or bad, which have shaped and complicated civilization—is to extend the scope of social observation and to serve civilization.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

    In the service of Caesar, everything is legitimate.
    Pierre Corneille (1606–1684)
