The Sunset Limited is a passenger train that for most of its history has run between New Orleans, Louisiana and Los Angeles, California. From early 1993 through late August 2005 it also operated from New Orleans to Miami (and, later, to Jacksonville, Florida), during which time it was the only true transcontinental passenger train in American history. After late August 2005, the service reverted to the original Los Angeles to New Orleans routing after the service between New Orleans and Orlando was suspended following the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina.
During fiscal year 2011, the Sunset Limited carried nearly 100,000 passengers, an increase of 8.8% over FY2010. The train carried the fewest passengers of any long-distance train in the Amtrak system. During FY2011, the train had a total revenue of $11,138,286, an 11.8% increase over FY2010.

Famous quotes containing the words sunset and/or limited:
“...stare into the lake of sunset as it runs
boiling, over the west past all control
rolling and swamps the heartbeat and repeats
sea beyond sea after unbearable suns;
think: poems fixed this landscape: Blake, Donne, Keats.”
—Muriel Rukeyser (19131980)
“In many ways, life becomes simpler [for young adults]. . . . We are expected to solve only a finite number of problems within a limited range of possible solutions. . . . Its a mental vacation compared with figuring out who we are, what we believe, what were going to do with our talents, how were going to solve the social problems of the globe . . .and what the perfect way to raise our children will be.”
—Roger Gould (20th century)
