Despite not being the commercial hit it was expected to be in the US, Sunflower received considerable critical acclaim upon release and in subsequent years. Pitchfork Media has called the album "perhaps the strongest album they released post-Pet Sounds", while some had even hailed it as the Beach Boys' Sgt. Pepper. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album four stars, saying it is one of the Beach Boys' best albums. Music critic Robert Christgau gave it an A-. The album has gained more popularity since its release. In 2003, Rolling Stone named it the 380th Best Album of All Time in its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Johnston's "Deirdre" was sampled on the 1995 Super Nintendo Entertainment System game, EarthBound.

Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or reaction:
“Probably more than youngsters at any age, early adolescents expect the adults they care about to demonstrate the virtues they want demonstrated. They also tend to expect adults they admire to be absolutely perfect. When adults disappoint them, they can be critical and intolerant.”
—The Lions Clubs International and the Quest Nation. The Surprising Years, I, ch.4 (1985)
“An actor must communicate his authors given messagecomedy, tragedy, serio- comedy; then comes his unique moment, as he is confronted by the looked-for, yet at times unexpected, reaction of the audience. This split second is his; he is in command of his medium; the effect vanishes into thin air; but that moment has a power all its own and, like power in any form, is stimulating and alluring.”
—Eleanor Robson Belmont (18781979)
