Story of the Year has most popularly been referred to as representing the genres post-hardcore alternative rock, and punk metal. Although these are recognized as the band's primary genres, they have also been known to perform in styles of alternative metal, hard rock, pop punk, and emo (or emocore). The band, however, prefers not to be labeled at all, and tends to simply refer to themselves as a "rock band".
