Stodhart Tunnel is a tunnel on the Peak Forest Tramway at Chapel Milton, Derbyshire. Until May 2013, it was considered to be the earliest rail-related tunnel in the world, but is now believed to be pre-dated by Fritchley Tunnel on the Butterley Gangroad at Bullbridge, also in Derbyshire. One portal was destroyed by a road re-alignment in 1949, but the other survives. It is Grade II* listed and on the Buildings at Risk Register.
Famous quotes containing the word tunnel:
“You may raise enough money to tunnel a mountain, but you cannot raise money enough to hire a man who is minding his own business.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
