Star Channel

Star Channel is a Greek television network that broadcasts a mix of foreign and Greek programming. It launched in December 1993 and is owned by Nea Tileorasi A.E.. The main news bulletin is called Star Eidiseis, which is currently hosted by Aimilios Liatsos. The Star Channel logo is a row of six rhomboid-shapes (orange, red, magenta, blue, green and yellow) which form part of a stylized star. The word STAR is sometimes placed at the bottom of the logo.

Star Channel is mostly known in Greece for its unique light programming style, both in terms of live shows and news content, with increased focus on lifestyle, showbiz and fashion news and on comedic and innovative presentation, diverging from the traditional format followed by other channels. This has resulted in the channel's large popularity, especially among youth demographics where it consistently has the highest ratings, and contributed to it being the only profitable Greek television network for almost a decade.

In 2010, Star Channel were escorted away from the Eurovision Song Contest by police after accusations of illegally transmitting footage from the dress rehearsal.

Famous quotes containing the words star and/or channel:

The obvious parallels between Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz have frequently been noted: in both there is the orphan hero who is raised on a farm by an aunt and uncle and yearns to escape to adventure. Obi-wan Kenobi resembles the Wizard; the loyal, plucky little robot R2D2 is Toto; C3PO is the Tin Man; and Chewbacca is the Cowardly Lion. Darth Vader replaces the Wicked Witch: this is a patriarchy rather than a matriarchy.
Andrew Gordon, U.S. educator, critic. “The Inescapable Family in American Science Fiction and Fantasy Films,” Journal of Popular Film and Television (Summer 1992)

There is the falsely mystical view of art that assumes a kind of supernatural inspiration, a possession by universal forces unrelated to questions of power and privilege or the artist’s relation to bread and blood. In this view, the channel of art can only become clogged and misdirected by the artist’s concern with merely temporary and local disturbances. The song is higher than the struggle.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
