Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster - Advanced Solid Rocket Booster

Advanced Solid Rocket Booster

NASA was planning on replacing the post-Challenger SRBs with a new Advanced Solid Rocket Booster (ASRB) to be built by Aerojet at a new facility, on the location of a canceled Tennessee Valley Authority nuclear power plant, at Yellow Creek, Mississippi. The ASRB would have produced additional thrust in order to increase shuttle payload, so that it could carry modules and construction components to the ISS. The ASRB program was canceled in 1993 in favor of continued use and improvement of the SRB.

Two ASRB casings can be found on the Space Shuttle Pathfinder on display at the United States Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Famous quotes containing the words advanced, solid and/or rocket:

The most advanced nations are always those who navigate the most. The power which the sea requires in the sailor makes a man of him very fast, and the change of shores and population clears his head of much nonsense of his wigwam.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Manuel showed her his open hand: “Look at this finger, how meager it seems, and this one even weaker, and this other one no stronger, and this one all by himself and on his own.”
Then he made a fist: “But now, is it strong enough, big enough, solid enough? It seems so doesn’t it?”
    Jacques Roumain (1907–1945)

A rocket is an experiment; a star is an observation.
    José Bergamín (1895–1983)
