Sonora Matancera - Later History

Later History

For traditionalists, the death of Rogelio Martínez on May 13, 2001 marked the demise of La Sonora Matancera. For all that, Javier Vázquez, with the blessing of Rogelio Martínez, Jr., leads a group in Las Vegas, Nevada called by this name. Some traditionalists don't consider it the "real" La Sonora. They base their opinion on the fact that Conjunto Sonora Matancera was the product of a specific collective of instrumentalists, vocalists, songwriters, and arrangers as well as a particular socioeconomic environment. Accordingly, these traditionalists feel that their like will never be seen again. Still, this version of La Sonora Matancera is faithful to the sonic identity of the original band.
