Legacy and Honors

  • In 1999, Renee Moore created Solomon Northup Day and approached Mayor Michael J. O'Connell (R) who erected a historical marker at the corner of Congress and Broadway, to commemorate Solomon Northup's life. An exhibit panel on Mr. Northup's life is at the Heritage Park Visitor Center.
  • On May 23, 2000 as part of the Bicentennial Local Legacies project, Renee Moore, founder of Solomon Northup Day, was honored along with other Americans at a reception in the Library of Congress's (LOC) Great Hall in Washington DC. 'Solomon Northup Day - a Celebration of Freedom' is included in the archive at the Folklife Center, Library of Congress.
  • The Saratoga Springs City Council adopted "Solomon Northup Day" as an annual celebration that is held every third Saturday in July; it highlights the city's diversity, history and culture.
  • The Historical Society of Saratoga Springs, along with the Mayor's office, has established a permanent exhibit in the Visitors Center to celebrate Solomon Northup Day, the first time an African American has been honored in the city.
