SOCKS - Comparison

Comparison

SOCKS operates at a lower level than HTTP proxying: SOCKS uses a handshake protocol to inform the proxy software about the connection that the client is trying to make and then acts as a transparently as possible, whereas an HTTP proxy works for HTTP protocol (at the requesting end, as it can typically do FTP as a retrieval protocol ... ) . This means that the http proxy interprets and rewrites headers to suit and is not transparent. HTTP is transported over a TCP connection only HTTP proxies take an HTTP request and forward it to an HTTP server. Though HTTP proxying has a different use-case in mind, the CONNECT method allows one to forward TCP connections, there is however no mechanism for UDP proxying. The following examples show the difference between the two methods:

Famous quotes containing the word comparison:

Most parents aren’t even aware of how often they compare their children. . . . Comparisons carry the suggestion that specific conditions exist for parental love and acceptance. Thus, even when one child comes out on top in a comparison she is left feeling uneasy about the tenuousness of her position and the possibility of faring less well in the next comparison.
    Marianne E. Neifert (20th century)

The difference between human vision and the image perceived by the faceted eye of an insect may be compared with the difference between a half-tone block made with the very finest screen and the corresponding picture as represented by the very coarse screening used in common newspaper pictorial reproduction. The same comparison holds good between the way Gogol saw things and the way average readers and average writers see things.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)

What is man in nature? A nothing in comparison with the infinite, an all in comparison with the nothing—a mean between nothing and everything.
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)
