Sir John Lawes School - History

History

Thanks to the effort of, and largely at the expense of, John Bennett Lawes, work began to start education of Harpenden's youth in 1847. This culminated in a school being maintained and enlarged with Sir Lawes' funds and on ground adjoining to his until 1920, when land was obtained by Harpenden County Council from the Manland Common. This is now the site for the Sir John Lawes and Manland Primary schools. Originally, SJL was called Manland Secondary School, but was renamed in recognition of the efforts of their namesake.

In 1939, the main buildings for both schools were completed, just in time for the Second World War, when the then 'Manland School' had to accommodate evacuees of London from Hugh Myddleton School

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is nothing truer than myth: history, in its attempt to “realize” myth, distorts it, stops halfway; when history claims to have “succeeded” this is nothing but humbug and mystification. Everything we dream is “realizable.” Reality does not have to be: it is simply what it is.
    Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)

A poet’s object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)

The history of American politics is littered with bodies of people who took so pure a position that they had no clout at all.
    Ben C. Bradlee (b. 1921)
