Silwan - Geography

Geography

Historically, Silwan was located on the eastern slope of the Kidron Valley, above the outlet of the Gihon Spring opposite the City of David. The villagers cultivated the arable land in the Kidron Valley, which in biblical tradition formed the king's gardens during the Davidic dynasty, to grow vegetables for market in Jerusalem. Nineteenth century travelers describe it as verdant and cultivated, and perched on a steep, slippery scarp cut into hillside. It now lies on on both sides of the Kidron Valley and runs alongside the eastern slopes of Jabel Mukaber.
