History
Originally consisting of seven stations (from National Stadium to Sathon) when the BTS opened in 1999, the 2.2 kilometre extension across the river to Wongwian Yai was opened on 15 May 2009. A further extension to Bang Wa in Phasi Charoen District is under construction, with the first station of the line, Pho Nimit, opened on 12 January 2012. The extension will initially be operated by a separate shuttle service until the single-track bottleneck at Saphan Taksin can be fixed by removing the station.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“We know only a single science, the science of history. One can look at history from two sides and divide it into the history of nature and the history of men. However, the two sides are not to be divided off; as long as men exist the history of nature and the history of men are mutually conditioned.”
—Karl Marx (18181883)
“Three million of such stones would be needed before the work was done. Three million stones of an average weight of 5,000 pounds, every stone cut precisely to fit into its destined place in the great pyramid. From the quarries they pulled the stones across the desert to the banks of the Nile. Never in the history of the world had so great a task been performed. Their faith gave them strength, and their joy gave them song.”
—William Faulkner (18971962)
“I believe my ardour for invention springs from his loins. I cant say that the brassiere will ever take as great a place in history as the steamboat, but I did invent it.”
—Caresse Crosby (18921970)
