She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Masters Degrees in Media Management and Mass Communication from Governors State University. Underwood once served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and frequently makes jokes about "all the creative places you can get busy on a military base."
Underwood is a lifetime member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, first joining in 1990. She served as president of the organization's Omicron Rho Zeta chapter, as the National Chair of Honorary Members, and as the National Executive Board Chair. She also chartered a graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta in Inglewood, California.

In the fall of 2011, Underwood revealed that after dating seven years, her husband--who might have suffered from clinical depression--committed suicide after they had been married three years.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:
“Hostesses who entertain much must make up their parties as ministers make up their cabinets, on grounds other than personal liking.”
—George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)
“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. And also the only real tragedy in life is being used by personally minded men for purposes which you recognize to be base.”
—George Bernard Shaw (18561950)
