Sensational Nightingales - Musical Career

Musical Career

The group was founded in 1942 by Barney Parks, who had formerly sung with the Dixie Hummingbirds. Julius "June" Cheeks joined the group in 1946. Cheeks left and returned to the group several times during its heyday, then left in 1960 to form his own group, "the Sensational Knights".

The group presently consists of Joseph 'JoJo' Wallace, Larry Moore, Horace "Sug" Thompson, and guitarist Darrell Luster.

Horace "Sug" Thompson is also the grandfather of R&B singer Patrice Jones (www.patricejonesmusic.com). Patrice credits her grandfather and the group on being one of her most influential mentors. She claims "Sug" taught her stage performance and learning to "build" her show.

Famous quotes containing the words musical and/or career:

If we cannot sing of faith and triumph, we will sing our despair. We will be that kind of bird. There are day owls, and there are night owls, and each is beautiful and even musical while about its business.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Clearly, society has a tremendous stake in insisting on a woman’s natural fitness for the career of mother: the alternatives are all too expensive.
    Ann Oakley (b. 1944)
