Reception

Sena has ranked highly in the Weekly Shōnen Jump popularity polls for the series, continuously placing in the top five. In the first poll he placed in first, but in another two Sena ranked second place, always behind Hiruma. Several pieces of merchandise based on Sena have also been released, including action figures, cosplay pieces, and resin and ceramic statues.

Several publications for manga, anime, video games, and other related media have commented on Sena's character. Carlo Santos from Anime News Network described Sena as "the archetypal shōnen protagonist", but said he is "the polar opposite of those talkative, obnoxious, up-and-at-'em heroes that populate so many other series." Writing for Mania.com, Jarred Pine also comments about Sena be an archetypical character, despite he stated Sena is "very likeable". Pine praised the Sena's debut saying that "was a memorable one, as it was both intense and hilarious." Santos also called him "the underdog who falls and gets up over and over again". Zac Bertschy from Anime News Network said that Sena "unlike so many other shōnen sports heroes, stops moping around and doubting himself and generally tries his damnest" and celebrated he is "introspective, kind, and resourceful, something most shōnen heroes can't claim by the third volume of their respective series."
