Semir Zeki - Formative Influences

Formative Influences

When at school, Zeki got acquainted with work on the brain, especially from John Zachary Young and vowed to work with him, which he did, at University College London. He initially studied anthropology, then switched to medicine, finally taking a PhD in anatomy.

Zeki then worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and at St. Elizabeths Hospital, Washington, DC before returning to University College London as Henry Head Research Fellow of the Royal Society.

Famous quotes containing the words formative and/or influences:

The social forces that operate on a family during the daughter’s formative years continue to shape her experience. Thus the families, schools, and jobs that involve poor women are likely to be very hierarchically arranged, demanding conformity, passivity, and obedience—all unsupportive of continued intellectual growth.
    Mary Field Belenky (20th century)

I am fooling only myself when I say my mother exists now only in the photograph on my bulletin board or in the outline of my hand or in the armful of memories I still hold tight. She lives on in everything I do. Her presence influenced who I was, and her absence influences who I am. Our lives are shaped as much by those who leave us as they are by those who stay. Loss is our legacy. Insight is our gift. Memory is our guide.
    Hope Edelman (20th century)
