Selene - Parentage

Parentage

She is called the daughter of Hyperion, the Titan lord of light, watching and the east by his wife and sister Theia, Titaness of sight, tracing and the shining blue light of heaven (aethre). Theia was also known by the names of Euryphaessa and Aethra. This makes Selene the sister of Helios (the sun) and Eos (the dawn).

Hesiod, Theogony 371 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th or C7th B.C.) : "And Theia was subject in love to Hyperion and bare great Helios (Sun) and clear Selene (Moon) and Eos (Dawn) who shines upon all that are on earth and upon the deathless Gods who live in the wide heaven."

Homeric Hymn 31 to Helius (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C7th - 4th B.C.) : "For Hyperion wedded glorious Euryphaessa, his own sister, who bare him lovely children, rosy-armed Eos (Dawn) and rich-tressed Selene (Moon) and tireless Helios (Sun)."

Furthermore Selene was sometimes said to be the daughter of either Pallas or Helios.

Homeric Hymn 4 to Hermes 100 ff : "Bright Selene, daughter of the lord Pallas, Megamedes' son."

Euripides, Phoenicians 175 ff (trans. Vellacott) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) : "Selene, circle of gleaming gold, daughter of radiant-belted Helios (Sun)."
