Scottish Poetry Library - The Building

The Building

Since 1999, the library has been based in Crichton's Close, just off the Canongate in Edinburgh's Old Town. The library building was designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects, and was shortlisted for Channel 4's "Building of the Year" in 2000. It has been described as "a poem in glass and stone", and was included in Prospect magazine's list of the 100 best modern Scottish buildings.

Famous quotes containing the word building:

Culture is a sham if it is only a sort of Gothic front put on an iron building—like Tower Bridge—or a classical front put on a steel frame—like the Daily Telegraph building in Fleet Street. Culture, if it is to be a real thing and a holy thing, must be the product of what we actually do for a living—not something added, like sugar on a pill.
    Eric Gill (1882–1940)

The limits of prudence: one cannot jump out of a burning building gradually.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
