Scottish Independence

Scottish independence (Scots: Scots unthirldom, Scottish Gaelic: Neo-eisimeileachd na h-Alba) is a political aim of some political parties, advocacy groups and individuals for Scotland (which is a country of the United Kingdom), to once again become an independent sovereign state.

The Scottish Government has expressed its intention to hold an independence referendum in late 2014.

Famous quotes containing the words scottish and/or independence:

We’ll never know the worth of water till the well go dry.
—18th-century Scottish proverb, collected in James Kelly, Complete Collection of Scottish Proverbs, no. 351 (1721)

...there was the annual Fourth of July picketing at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. ...I thought it was ridiculous to have to go there in a skirt. But I did it anyway because it was something that might possibly have an effect. I remember walking around in my little white blouse and skirt and tourists standing there eating their ice cream cones and watching us like the zoo had opened.
Martha Shelley, U.S. author and social activist. As quoted in Making History, part 3, by Eric Marcus (1992)
