Saya San

Saya San (also spelled Hsaya, original name Yar Kyaw.Burmese: ဆရာစံ, ; 24 October 1876 – 28 November 1931) was a monk, a physician and the leader of the “Saya San Rebellion” of 1930-1932 in Burma. The series of uprisings that have been called the 'Saya San rebellion' has been regarded as one of Southeast Asia's quintessential anti-colonial movements, spreading throughout the Lower Burma delta and into hills of the Shan States; involving numerous communities, thousands of villagers and several thousand counterinsurgency troops. However, the discussion of Saya San and the rebellion among the intelligentsia has persisted till now.
