Savi Technology

Savi Technology is a United States-based company that provides real-time RFID solutions for managing and securing global supply chain assets. Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, Savi has offices in Mountain View, California; Lexington, Kentucky; Singapore; London, United Kingdom and Melbourne, Australia. Savi was founded in 1989 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, managed by Lockheed Martin Global Training and Logistics in Orlando, Florida.

Savi focuses on building and installing wireless networks across the globe that offer companies a "window" into the location and condition of goods and other assets that are otherwise difficult to track or monitor. Savi has been the primary provider of active RFID for the U.S. Department of Defense since 1993, and helped build the DoD's In-Transit Visibility network. The company is also the primary technology provider for cargo-monitoring networks used by NATO and Dow Chemical.

Lockheed Martin Corporation acquired Savi Technology on June 8, 2006. "Savi's talented team of employees has successfully developed a complete line of active RFID solutions. The acquisition of this innovative company is consistent with our strategy of making investments that significantly enhance the capabilities we can offer our customers," said Robert J. Stevens, Lockheed Martin's Chairman, President, and CEO. In 2006, Lockheed Martin had 140,000 employees and revenues of about $40 billion.

In November 2011, citing Savi Technology's need to grow in commercial sectors—as opposed to the military, on which the bulk of its business has traditionally been focused—defense contractor Lockheed Martin intends to sell Savi. Lockheed Martin expects the sale to take place during 2012. "While there have been a host of events that have led to this point," says Heather Kelly, a Lockheed Martin spokesperson, "the decision to sell Savi reflects a solid business rationale that recognizes that there are fewer opportunities with Savi's products in our core Lockheed Martin market areas."

Famous quotes containing the word technology:

Radio put technology into storytelling and made it sick. TV killed it. Then you were locked into somebody else’s sighting of that story. You no longer had the benefit of making that picture for yourself, using your imagination. Storytelling brings back that humanness that we have lost with TV. You talk to children and they don’t hear you. They are television addicts. Mamas bring them home from the hospital and drag them up in front of the set and the great stare-out begins.
