Veeramasti/Veeramathi Cult
In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, particularly in the Kongu Nadu region, there are numerous temples for Veeramasthis, literally the brave ones, who perish on the funeral pyre of their deceased husbands. Even Sangam literature contains many such references. All such incidences are purely voluntary and the women may choose to live as a widow. Thousands of such temples are scattered throughout this region. People show the highest degree of veneration to such temples.
