Early Life
Born in a remote village of jalandhar,he belonged to a Middle class family.He completed his BA from jalandhar then went for MA in khalsa College Mumbai and later completed his Phd.He worked as Journalist before joining politics.He fought his first elections from a Akali DaL ticket and later joined congress at the time of akali breakout in late 1960's.
