Sarda River

Sarda River

Sharda River forms part of the border between the nations of India and Nepal. It is called the Mahakali River in Nepal and Kali Gad by local pahari people . This boundary was established by the 1816 Sugauli treaty, but a portion of this border near Tibet has been in dispute. After leaving the border, the river flows southeast across the Ganges basin until it merges into the Ghagra river, an affluent of the Ganges. India has proposed building a dam across the Sharda in Nepalese territory, but this plan has proven controversial.

Famous quotes containing the word river:

The river’s tent is broken; the last fingers of leaf
Clutch and sink into the wet bank. The wind
Crosses the brown land, unheard. The nymphs are departed.
Sweet Thames, run softly, till I end my song.
The river bears no empty bottles, sandwich papers,
Silk handkerchiefs, cardboard boxes, cigarette ends
Or other testimony of summer nights.
