Samford Hall - "Holiday Tree" Naming Controversy

"Holiday Tree" Naming Controversy

Since 2000, an evergreen tree in front of Samford Hall has been the site of the school's Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The decision to officially refer to the tree as a "Holiday Tree" (rather than a "Christmas Tree") resulted in controversy in 2005 when commentators on townhall.com and World Net Daily criticized Auburn University's choice of names as an example of political correctness gone amok. As a compromise, the ceremony was in subsequent years renamed the "Holiday Celebration featuring the Lighting of the Christmas Tree."

Famous quotes containing the words holiday, tree, naming and/or controversy:

    With a broad shoehorn
I am unstuffing a big bird in this dream
    Msomebody else’s holiday feast—
and repacking the crop of my own,
knowing it will burst with such
    onion, oyster, savory bread crust.
    Maxine Kumin (b. 1925)

Happy are those who find wisdom, and those who get understanding, for her income is better than silver, and her revenue better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy.
    Bible: Hebrew, Proverbs 3:13-18.

    The night is itself sleep
And what goes on in it, the naming of the wind,
Our notes to each other, always repeated, always the same.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
