Background

Charles Henry Cramp, the owner and son of the founder of William Cramp and Sons, had a relationship with the Imperial Russian Navy dating back to the late 1870s when his firm built the auxiliary cruisers Afrika, Azia, Evropa and Zabiiaka. Cramp also repaired several Russian warships visiting America in 1893 and he cultivated his contacts in the Russian Navy throughout the 1890s. Famous quotes containing the word background:

In the true sense one’s native land, with its background of tradition, early impressions, reminiscences and other things dear to one, is not enough to make sensitive human beings feel at home.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)

He was a great public hero, and anything I did that someone didn’t approve of, they would always feel that President Kennedy wouldn’t have done that.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)
