History
The school was named after Rose Lee Hardy, one of the most influential educators in the nation during the 20th century. She was born in Winchester, Virginia at the beginning of the century.
The original Hardy school building stands at Foxhall Road and Q Street NW. The current Hardy school building faces Wisconsin Avenue and 34th Street NW with its street address on the 35th Street NW side.
For several decades after its construction in 1933, the current building was home to Gordon Junior High School. Gordon's school colors were green and gold and the building was well known for the beautiful ivy which clung to its exterior walls. The ivy was removed in the 1950s, presumably to protect the mortar. For several years before Hardy moved to this location, the building was home to the Carlos Rosario Adult Education Center.
The playground at what was then known as Gordon was surrounded by dogwood trees. Annually for many years, the school held the Dogwood Festival each spring to celebrate the beauty of the school's surroundings.
