Root Group

In algebra, a root group is a group together with a set of prime numbers satisfying the axiom:

.

To specify the set of primes, a group may be referred to as a P-root group. For a single prime p it may be referred to as a p-root group.

An abelian root group is such a group where the multiplication is commutative.

P-root groups may be further classified depending on whether the unit element has a non-trivial root for any or all of the primes in the set P.

Famous quotes containing the words root and/or group:

But a cultivated man becomes ashamed of his property, out of new respect for his nature. Especially he hates what he has if he see that it is accidental,—came to him by inheritance, or gift, or crime; then he feels that it is not having; it does not belong to him, has no root in him and merely lies there because no revolution or no robber takes it away.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

If the Russians have gone too far in subjecting the child and his peer group to conformity to a single set of values imposed by the adult society, perhaps we have reached the point of diminishing returns in allowing excessive autonomy and in failing to utilize the constructive potential of the peer group in developing social responsibility and consideration for others.
    Urie Bronfenbrenner (b. 1917)
