Rongmei Naga - Religion of The Rongmei Tribe

Religion of The Rongmei Tribe

The religion of the Ruangmeis has been greatly determined by basic human needs, and is often seen to include magic and mysticism. The traditional religion of Ruangmei is known as Tingkao Raguang Chap. Many of the tribals still follow traditional tribal practices. They believe that sacrifices are a must in order to appease the deities, as otherwise they might incur their wrath and this will ruin their crops. When the Christian missionaries started coming in, majority of the Ruangmeis converted to Christianity. In fact Christianity has been seen to exist here since the last 150 years. However, some of the Ruangmei people still follow the ancient traditional practices. In Assam, a significant number of the Rongmei are followers of POUPEI CHAPRIAK. Recently there were clashes between the Hindu Rongmei and the Christian Hmar tribes in Assam.

According to the 1991 Census, 46.60% of all Naga living in Assam were Hindu (7,155 out of 15,354). In 2001, it declined to 37.62% (8,165 out of 21,706). Recently there has been lots of new Christian converts.

Famous quotes containing the words religion and/or tribe:

Whereas Freud was for the most part concerned with the morbid effects of unconscious repression, Jung was more interested in the manifestations of unconscious expression, first in the dream and eventually in all the more orderly products of religion and art and morals.
    Lewis Mumford (1895–1990)

In some ways being a parent is like being an anthropologist who is studying a primitive and isolated tribe by living with them.... To understand the beauty of child development, we must shed some of our socialization as adults and learn how to communicate with children on their own terms, just as an anthropologist must learn how to communicate with that primitive tribe.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
